I used to be remarkably careless with money – never really paying attention to how much I was spending. I always knew how much money my check was going to, be but trust me – it was spent before I even got paid.
 
How sad.

I know all about living paycheck to paycheck but after several financial catastrophes, I realized that I needed to take control of my money and I needed to get serious about changing my bad money habits. I was married with 6 kids and we were behind on every bill and owed money to countless creditors. 
 
My struggles with money were real and they had me so stressed and depressed that I was always angry and agitated. I was a hot mess and my life was in turmoil. 
 
Things needed to change.

I ain’t about fluffing up my post with nonsense – I like to get right to it. The quicker I get you the information you need, the quicker you can get started on making changes. 

 
And if you’re anything like me (hopefully you’re not, lol), then you want to cut through the BS and get started.
 
In 2016, my husband and I were lucky enough to stumble upon Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace Universitycourse at a local church near our tiny apartment. We loved the class so much we ended-up taking the 9-week course twice. Financial Peace University taught us a lot about managing money.

The course broke everything down into steps, which was exactly what we needed. One of the best takeaways from the classes, was that we learned we needed to manage and control ourselves when it came to dealing with money. Money wasn’t the issue, we were. 
 

How I climbed out of rock bottom

 
After the disaster of paying almost $200 in overdraft fees in a matter of 2-weeks, I created a monthly income and expense worksheet (through Google Sheets) to help me keep track of how much money was coming in and how much money was going out.
 
I was paying for subscriptions that I didn’t even know I had signed up for, like PlayStation Network, Netflix, Microsoft Office, Apple iTunes (just to name a few). Mannn, was I pissed… I was angry at every thing and every body, especially myself. I couldn’t even look in the mirror because I was so disappointed with myself, but I knew only I was to blame.
 
Enough was enough! 
 
I had no right to be angry at anyone but me, and I knew that only I could change my bad money habits. 

 

 

4 steps to change  your bad money habits:

Stop living paycheck to paycheck with these 4 easy steps that you can start using today. 
 
 

1.Get organized by setting goals. If you need help with setting goals –Click here and read my post about goals.

2.Start distinguishing between what is required to survive, what’s a necessity, and what is a want.

  • Required: Place to live (rent/mortgage), Food, Transportation (car note, gas, maintenance), Savings, Medication, etc. 
  • Necessity: Clothing, Power, Health Insurance, Cell Phone, etc.
  • Wants: Cable, Netflix, vacations, Amazon Prime, Etc. 

3. Inform your family & friends of what you are doing because you need them to understand how important this is for you and you don’t want them to feel any type of way when you decline family parties and/or activities. Truthfully, I needed as much help as I could get and telling my family was the best thing I could have done. 

4. Make it a priority to review the worksheet once a month (before the 1st of the month), by setting a calendar reminder with an alarm. Update the worksheet according to what month it is and include any extra expenses like; Birthdays, Holidays, Events, etc.
